As many of you know, when it comes to partying and drinking, our stance here at The Wilder Firm is that you can always have as much fun as you want as long as you have a safe and sober designated driver to get you home. Having a DD not only means that you don’t have to worry about driving after a night of cocktails, but also that you are doing your part to keep the roads safe by ensuring that a sober driver is leaving the bar.
Unfortunately, a shocking new study conducted by researchers at the University of Florida revealed that when people are choosing a designated driver, they are not always thinking in terms of sobriety. Instead, DD’s are often chosen by friends based on whoever is the “least drunk” when it comes time to leave the bar. However, if you have been out drinking for a few hours with friends, the least drunk person definitely does not always translate into being the most sober or that they are okay to get behind the wheel of a car.
The study, published in The Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs , breath tested more than 1,000 volunteer “party-goers” at a bar in a large university town in the Southeast. The group of participants were chosen between the hours of 10:00 pm and 2:30 am by researchers who asked people who were leaving the bar to volunteer in the testing. All of the people tested had identified themselves as the chosen designated driver for their friend group.
However, the results showed that not every designated driver was also a sober driver. According to the results, 1 in 3 (35%) of designated drivers tested had consumed alcohol and 1/2 of those people recorded a Blood Alcohol Count (BAC) of 0.05 or higher.
This is extremely dangerous because 0.08 is considered the legal limit in most states for driving, and depending on your weight and average alcohol consumption, the amount it takes for you to become intoxicated may actually be even lower. Therefore, make sure that you are choosing a designated driver that is SOBER, rather than one who thinks they are the closest to it.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing an appropriate designated driver:
Going out to the bar with friends is a great activity during the summer months. However, always ensure that you are being safe and have an appropriate sober ride home so that you can avoid drinking and driving.
