What Is BAC and How Is It Measured?
Blood Alcohol Concentration, or BAC, is the measure of alcohol in a person’s bloodstream. It is typically measured as a percentage to show how much of an individual’s blood is made up of alcohol. For example, a BAC of 0.08 percent means that there are 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. In Texas, the legal BAC limit for most drivers is 0.08 percent. However, even lower BAC levels can lead to penalties for specific groups, such as drivers under the age of 21 or commercial drivers who have stricter rules they must follow. BAC is measured through various testing methods, with the most common being breath tests and blood tests. Breath tests are frequently used during traffic stops as they provide a quick result for law enforcement officers. Blood tests are typically administered at medical facilities and may be used in cases where a more accurate measurement is necessary. The accuracy of these tests is crucial, as it determines the level of intoxication and, consequently, the severity of the legal consequences.
